SWEDEN

Overview

Sweden is a sparsely populated Nordic country, bordering Norway, Finland, Denmark, and the Baltic sea. One of the world’s northernmost countries, Sweden is the largest country in Northern Europe, the third-largest country in the European Union and the fifth largest country in Europe by surface area. It is also the sixteenth-wealthiest country in the world in terms of GDP (gross domestic product) per capita with an export-oriented mixed economy driven by its engineering and telecommunications sectors, and its automotive and pharmaceutical industries. Sweden’s income Gini coefficient at 0.25, barely higher than Japan and Denmark, is the third-lowest among developed countries and proves Sweden has low-income inequality. With one of the highest standards of living in the world, Sweden is a rich country that is home to many world-renowned multinationals like Volvo, Vattenfall, Skanska, Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications AB, Svenska Cellulosa Aktiebolaget, Electrolux, IKEA, Atlas Copco, and Securitas.

Sweden’s education system is just as impressive as its economy. In 2000, 32% of the Swedish population held a tertiary degree, making the country 5th in the OECD in that category. There are currently about 39 universities (public and private) in Sweden, with the majority constantly ranking highly in global rankings like the Times Higher Education World University Rankings and the Shanghai Jiao Tong Academic Ranking of World Universities. Even though most courses are in Swedish, the country’s official language, there is a growing number of programs offered entirely in English. Besides, English is widely spoken everywhere you go. Sweden is home to many prestigious universities like the Karolinska Institute, founded in 1810, that frequently ranks as one of the best and most prestigious universities in the world to study medicine.
