IRELAND

Overview

Ireland is a small island nation partitioned between the Republic of Ireland (formally named Ireland), which covers five-sixths of the island, and Northern Ireland, which is part of the United Kingdom. Ireland has a total population of about 6 million people (about 4.8 million live within the Republic of Ireland, and 1.8 million live in Northern Ireland). Although both jurisdictions have different currencies (the euro and pound sterling), a growing amount of commercial activity is carried out between the two territories.

Ireland has given the world-famous people like the Irish philosopher and theologian Johannes Scotus Eriugena, the scientist Robert Boyle, the 19th-century physicist, John Tyndall, who discovered the Tyndall effect, and Father Nicholas Joseph Callan, inventor of the induction coil transformer. Other notable Irishmen include Ernest Walton, winner of the 1951 Nobel Prize in Physics, and Sir William Rowan Hamilton.

Ireland offers hundreds of scholarships and funding schemes each year to attract international students. The Irish government for example pledged to invest 11.1 billion EUR to support international students in 2020. The higher education system in Ireland consists of nine universities, (seven in the Republic of Ireland and two in Northern Ireland, ) and multiple private independent colleges and institutes of technology. The entry requirements for international students to higher education are generally determined by each institution and require passing a national examination and sometimes an English language test as well.
